When a Pool Project is Never Ending
I honestly feel like when homeowners build a pool these days, they think a magic elf comes along to plunk one in overnight. In these days of instant gratification, homeowners have no idea how long a pool takes to build, nor do they have the vaguest idea about what the pool construction process is really like.
Recently, I had a homeowner ask me, Joe - why does pool construction take so long? I told asked him a few questions and it went something like this.
1) Do you have a homeowners association?
"Yeah, I do." He replied. "Well, you'll have to get an approval before you can get a pool permit and that takes time." I said "So does getting the permit" I added.
2) He built his own home, so I asked him what getting permits was like.
"Pulling teeth" He replied. "It was a nightmare when we built our home and the permit process was terrible" he added. "You can expect more of the same when it comes to pool construction" I said.
3) Are there any talented builders in your local area?
Because my friend lives in Florida, the answer was not many. Florida has a notorious lack of available skilled subcontractors. While you'd think there would be a bevy of available pool builders in Florida to choose from, there are only 1 or 2 I would even recommend. I told him about Custom Pools and Master Touch Pools.
4) Does your pool designer know what he's doing?
My friend designed his own pool. He facies himself a bit of a CAD expert. So for the sake of this question, let's say yes. Although professional pool designers make all the difference getting a pool plan approved.
5) Can you afford the pool you're building?
My friend Jeremiah wants an over the top pool like you'd see on the cover of Pool Magazine. He's an engineer so he makes good money. Still, the pool he wants he's definitely not going to have enough saved to pay cash for. It's a $200,000 home improvement. He'll need a swimming pool loan in order to build it. I can't even contemplate that headache. I'm simply a marketing expert and I'll stick to what I know best, telling people how to spend their money.
